Great food and atmosphere with attentive staff. My favorite menu item is the Louisiana style wings with a side of scorpion sauce. I highly recommend the barbecue wings with garlic.
Food was fantastic, fairly priced and the drinks were great! The bar tenders were fun and interactive. Really enjoyed our experience! Only complaint is that you can't smoke in the building, which I really enjoy chain smoking when I'm drinking.. but I also enjoyed that I didn't smell like a bar when I got home! So over all would highly recommend but also wouldn't buy too many drinks because I had to step out every time I wanted a smoke.
User reviews. This place has all the trapping of a hang out for adults. Food is okay, rave reviews are not in order on most food items. However, if you are a tomato pie lover (that is not pizza with tomato sauce), they have one with roasted red peppers. The beer selection is limited but should meet most anybody's taste. I like the Shiner Bock from Texas. Stay away from the meat loaf, unless you like yours grilled from the refrigerator (not too fresh). My son is fond of the hot roast beef sandwich, too much package gravy for me. Don't go if you are looking for the latest (i.e. sterile) sports bar...this place is old and proud of it.

We love Al's for it's great bar food and atmosphere. It's very relaxed. Be prepared to wait as it's usually busy with only a few wait staff. Good beer selection too.
**1/2 two and a half stars out of four. Great wings. The best in Altoona. Sandwiches are mediocre. Wait for food when it's crowded is outragous. Last time it took almost 2 hrs to get sandwiches and wings.
Decent Food, Slightly Awkward Atmosphere. I have heard a lot about the wings at Al's Tavern and had to try it out. The atmosphere is as you would expect of a busy bar situated in Altoona. They get a lot of traffic but appear to still have a lot of regulars that give you a looking over upon entry. It is a bit hectic and unclear, but the help was relatively friendly. The Cajun Wings were pretty good if you are into dry wings, and our loaded pizza was a solid offering. In the end, the food was quite good, but not good enough to warrant a regular trip.
Not Just Wings!. Not only are the wings here awesome, but the specialty sandwiches are some of the best i've ever had. I recommend Al's Hooter on Garlic toast WITH a fried egg or The Bada Bing Burger. They are both pretty messy, but you'll thank me.
