Good stuff.. I found the food to be quite good and the spicy was in fact ... spicy for once. Seems like with only one person serving and one in the kitchen it might be better to go there at times it is not so busy. The steamed spring rolls were great and I usually don't even like those.
Asked the waitress to make me her favorite. It was unreal. I will be back soon...definitely my new favorite Thai spot!
The Best Thai Food. My wife and I ordered the shrimp wrapped in egg roll wrappers and fried. This was served with a sauce I guessed to be made of duck sauce, pepper, and maybe a rice wine vinegar? I am unsure. My wife loved it. The shrimp here are large and they have a good flavor.
Next we ordered Tom Yum Goong and Tom Kha Gai. I preferred the Tom Yum Goong and my wife preferred the Tom Kha Gai. I noticed the nice strong flavors of lime and lemongrass in the soup, but there were other flavors present as well. More of a pleasing choral sound than a duo with backup, though the lime and lemongrass is prominently featured.
Our table was a see through sheet of glass or plastic over pictures of fish made out of metal, maybe salmon who had their mouths slightly open. To my back was a laminated newspaper article about elephants who enjoyed painting. Some of them paint with up and down motions and others paint "wild and crazy". There was a bright lamp above us. The restaurant is painted in earthy tones of green and beige to brown. I did noticed the menu covers which were covered in cushy cloth tapestry. There is a nice atmosphere to this place, and an artistic attention to detail not observed in many other restaurants.
Our food arrived. I ordered the famed and "off the menu" Massaman curry with beef and only one chile (or the way it naturally comes). All of the hoopla is deserved. This dish is the best dish I have ever tasted in or out of a restaurant. It is impossible to describe what this curry tastes like, but most of all it just tastes expensive. Perfectly balanced flavors in the curry, velvety smooth avocado that goes better than you would guess with curry, a sprinkling of roasted peanuts, and grilled onions as well. I tasted tamarind a little, lemongrass more, lime some, coconut milk some, and I am unsure of the rest. I have not come close to cooking anything like this before. This is my favorite dish I could order anywhere, not just Chattanooga.
My wife ordered the Panang curry with shrimp. It was very sweet and slightly hotter than my Massaman curry. Almost to me it tasted like thai barbecue because of the sweetness. She liked it, and agreed that sometimes she would rather get mine, but not all of the time.
We got tap water to drink. The portions were generous. We both ordered white rice to go with our meal. My Massaman Curry with Beef was 10.75. I am somewhat puzzled by how you could get that dish to taste that way for that price, in other words I did not begrudge Sawasdee for the 75 cents I spent on rice.
This place is a great value. A huge value in my estimation. The service was good. I do want to come back. I have eaten at other restaurants that remind me of this place namely Sweet Basil and Old Saigon. I could get in the mood to eat either of those places as well sometimes, but Sawasdee is my favorite by a long shot.
In the hour or so that we were there New Years Eve there were maybe 9 or 10 tables of people. This place isn't a secret, but it is a lesser known thai restaurant that more people should try. I have serious doubts as to how anyone could not appreciate or at least respect Sawasdee's curry dishes.
Go try this place. You owe it to yourself to form your own opinion. This is one of the best, least pretentious places to eat in Chattanooga. The quality level here is astronomical.
Authentic. I had the Pud Thai. It was slightly sour from the limes and moderately tangy from the tamarind. The daikon (and maybe some mild chili?) gave it a slight warmth. My favorite was the Thai Iced Tea. It was saffron infused delight.
Terrific. Great pad thai! casual and calm atmosphere. I love eating here for lunch.
Good food. As an Asian person who has traveled to southeast Asia and eaten a large amount of Thai food in Thailand, I like the food at Sawasdee.
I've only eaten the Pad Thai and the various curries, so I can't comment on the other menu items. The dishes I have eaten were excellent. And this is the only Thai restaurant in this area that will make the food sufficiently spicy for my needs. A lot of places cater to people who can't take the level of spice beyond the hot sauce at Taco Bell; not so here. I ordered the four pepper spice, and my mouth was on fire for a good half hour after my meal- just the way I like it.
My first choice.. When it's time to pick a restaurant, my first choice is Sawasdee. I love the Masaman curry and sticky rice and mango. It's savory, full of flavor, and owners are very gracious and often remember what we like to order.
Panang Heaven... if you're allowed to order it!. I've eaten at this Thai restaurant dozens and dozens of times. You just CANNOT find a better panang anywhere. The Thai server offers you a very "authentic" experience... I have to warn friends going for the first time that she can be a little rough around the edges. She won't let people order dishes too spicy or things that she thinks they won't like (I just have learned to laugh at this quirk) and they often won't let you sit at the tables made for sitting on the floor. Weird to have them and not use them, I say. Nevertheless, the food is out of this world and worth a little rudeness. I highly recommend the panang (add bamboo shoots if you want to bulk it up), pad prik king, satay chicken, and egg rolls. The soup is just mediocre. Off the beaten path and definitely a unique (and often hilarious!) dining experience.
Good food and people ;). The food was great and the woman whom I picked my order up from the evening I visited this restaurant from out of town was very nice and genuine about me being careful on the iced over roads Chattanooga had from the unusual snow fall they'd received while I was in town. She even kept the restaurant open past closing for me since I got lost trying to find her restaurant thanks to the gps being screwy on my great and powerful iphone.
Best place in Chattanooga.....
This was a good find a friend told me about in Saint Elmo Chattanooga.
The hours are only in the evenings but worth the trip. They had gluten free Curry so I had yellow Curry with tofu. I also tried the white / brown rice both were good. The desserts with delicious too. I had the sticky mango rice and Thai rice cup. The Thai rice had hazzle nuts to give a crunchy taste. The sticky mango was fresh.
Would I recommend this restaurant? Yes
Would I come again? Yes
This place has limited seating and a hole in a wall but this places taste the best.
We discovered this little family owned jewel. As some have said, it’s not like every other Thai food flavor profile. That’s not a bad thing. The food is excellent to our foodie palettes. Stop by and enjoy. Low key. Friendly. Good food. What more could you want?
Just like you see in a lot of the other reviews, this is amazing Thai food with very fresh ingredients. My wife had pad Thai, I had pad see yew. Yes, I spelled that second dish wrong. Don't let the looks of this place turn you off, the food is incredible
Two couples enjoyed a wonderful meal authentic Thai cuisine. Had a diverse range of dishes and everything was wonderful. Support this excellent restaurant and come to visit soon.
A neat little place for Thai food. Had the tofu fried rice. The taste of friend tofu was enjoyable. Felt that the overall spice.level is a bit low, so for regular Thai food fans, this might seem a little different, but definitely tasty. Parking spots are limited, so not sure of peak hour situations
