So glad they reopened!
Their shave ice is a top notch! Lots of fruits, sweet red beans, soybean powder and condensed milk. The best part of all is that you pour espresso over it to bring out complexity of good flavors
This is a cute little cafe inside the 88 grocery store. Their jumbo (you can have smaller size) shave ice is the BEST on the island. It's different than your regular Hawaiian shave ice like Matsumoto, Waiola or island vintage shave ice. This shaved ice is very smooth, it gives you the feeling of eating fresh soft snow. They put fresh fruit: sliced bananas, strawberries, grapes and a healthy amount of sweet red beans, mochi, almonds and kinako powder. The unique thing is you can pour an espresso coffee as the sauce for the shave ice. The sweetness from the beans and the bitterness from the espresso really complement each other. You should try their other stuff too. We tried the injeolmi sandwich (kinda like toasted bread with mochi inside), grapefruit ade and grape ade which was pretty interesting flavoe. I really like the grapefruit one over grape. On hot day, en hakkore shaved ice is our number one choice.
Cute cafe tucked away inside the makai Ewa corner of the Korean supermarket in little Korea. We came for the Bingsu / Bingsoo (빙수) shave ice topped with espresso. The serving was generous with lots of fresh fruit, sweet red bean, mochi confections, and misugaru (미수가루 roasted multi grain powder) shaved ice over some ice cream, with a drizzle of condensed milk. The serving definitely was made to be shared, unless it's your entire meal or you're a teenager! Pouring the coffee on any affogato dessert can be messy, so keep the container close as you pour! Very tasty, more varied and fresh than plain affogato, a nice fusion of East and West, this dish may be a new comfort and armour for the sultry summer/early fall days of Honolulu.
