The place to go for oysters and shrimp
Best shrimp and least expensive oysters ever! Friendly fast service in a very casual environment. They have a short menu, but they serve those few items perfectly.
The service is always good. (decades!) Gumbo, stuffed jalapenos, and the Texas Mini work for me! Everything else is great too! Seating is the only issue, can be tough to seat a group of 4 together, Captain T needs to add a barge attachment, it would stay full!
We stopped in for the oysters and crab and frog legs. Service was excellent and so was the food. We sat down and everything just flowed very good evening. Very friendly atmosphere. We be going back
just had to try Captain Tom's Seafood & Oyster Bar because the building, which looks like a ship was calling my name. There, I had their seafood gumbo, which was okay but not fabulous. Still, the serving was generous and the turnaround from the time I placed my order was pretty quick. They've a decent menu and their prices are fair and reasonable. I'd go back again.
Could possibly be the best gumbo I've ever had. I won't lie, I was a little nervous walking in. It's a restaurant in a "dry dock boat", not necessarily the cleanest looking, but the food was awesome. We had gumbo, boiled shrimp, fried shrimp and fried catfish. Everything was great. It's a must if you're ever in the northwest side of Houston.
What else to say!. All of the reviews that lead us here are true! Good, cheap food, with tight seating options, but well worth the wait. I personally had the frog legs and they were great, light batter, nice spice and crispy.
We will be going back over and over again!

Fresh, fun and frugal!. This place is remarkably fresh and delicious! The absolute best Gumbo I've ever had and the catfish is to die for! Can't beat the jumbo fried shrimp either. I love their tartar sauce and the yummy tea. Lots of micheladas served here, so much fun to watch them make them, and to shuck the oysters! We love love love this place!
Excellent Food but tough to sit. To be clear....I love this place. Excellent food and enjoy the atmosphere. Down side is it is always crowded (for a good reason) and because of the limited seating I don't take the whole family....usually a date night thing for the wife and I.
Michelada need i say more. My wife and i love the fried shrimp and stuffed jalapenos. The gumbo is also great. My mom gets the raw oysters that the guys here shuck right in front of you. i have heard the flounder is awesome too its next on my list. the micheladas are the best i have had my wife doesn't drink beer but she will drink these and they will put an oyster or a shrimp in it too. dang now im hungry i guess im going there for lunch now. oh yea the seating is first come first serve so its best to go as a couple or small group.
Looking for a unique experience? Stop by here. It’s self seating. Wait in line until a chair or group of chairs opens up. You have your choice of facing outside (windows) or inside (bar). Three are no tables only counters. Not ideal for small children. I had not been here prior. After a few minutes a waiter will stop by to take your order.
The menu is posted like a billboard. Make your choices and within a few minutes your order is served. It was fast, efficient, and the meal was good. I enjoyed gumbo, hush puppies, the Texas mini, and fries.
There is no check. Go up to the cashier and tell him your order. He will ring it up. Cash or card accepted.
Try it for its uniqueness. It’s worth it.
Amazing seafood at amazing price. Can’t beat it anywhere in town. Raw oysters and seafood gumbo on point, get at least the bowl not the cup you’re gonna want more. Went at 9:30pm on a Monday, place was packed. Glad they stay open till 11pm weekdays. Plenty of well lit safe parking. When I got there someone told me this is the best one, would have to agree. Their prices are much less than the other locations around town. Must sit at the bar for the full experience! Cocktail sauce…meh, just add some horseradish and Tabasco too it. Little slow to clean up spots at the bar though.
I'm 44 years old and I have loved this restaurant since I was 10. The unique atmosphere, the delicious food, and the happy staff are all reasons that you MUST try Captain Toms. I always make sure to get the gumbo, oysters on the half shell, and a Texas Mini (fried shrimp and fried catfish)
I live in Dallas now, but I promise you that anytime I'm in the Houston area, I will be eating here at LEAST once. This day I did takeout for 10 people. The food was excellent, as I expected. I even bought 2 pints of gumbo to freeze and gift to my dad for Christmas as he no longer lives in the area and misses it too. If there were 10 stars that I could give Captain Tom's, they would be one of the few to get all 10. Great value for the price too. Eat in if you can, but get to go at a minimum. Whatever you do, don't just drive by!!!

My family and I love this place. Great service, excellent food, and good atmosphere. The gumbo and micheladas are a must try! You can expect a wait if you have more than 2 people & want to sit around the bar. Well worth it though!
It looks like a hole in the wall joint until you taste the food.... And it is Very, Very Good!!! Highly recommend the fresh gulf shrimp they fry. The stuffed crab and Seafood Gumbo are very good also!
Walk in and seat yourself, order from the bar.

It gets a little uncomfortable after sitting for a while. Very close seating.
Very good restaurant, the business is very hot, the oysters inside are very fresh and plump, the seafood soup is also very good, and the price of fried fish is also very affordable. You must try this restaurant when you come to Houston. The overall price is very cheap!
What everyone says about busy is true but that's what you want to see because that's where the food is good.
It is unique in that the restaurant is built like a tug boat in a way. You walk in find a seat and go sit down. About half are shaped around the oyster bar and half are outward facing. And if you wait for someone to come take your order you would be wrong. Menu is simple and hangs from the middle of the room. just get one of the guy's attention and tell him what you want.
When your done tip the guys in cash
Your not getting a written ticket or anything and get up go to the register and tell the man what you ate. It's on your honor. I gotta tell ya though If you like seafood eat here and try the flounder but if a cross cut fried flounder isn't your bag they have amazing shrimp fresh oysters catfish even frog legs. Don't get all fancied up though and it's probably not a first date kind of place. BUT THE FOOD ROCKS.
Great place to go for simply prepared seafood. Expect it to be busy, really really, busy. If you don't go early, you'll wait for a spot. If you go in the mid day maybe you'll have a chance to get a spot. If you go for dinner, expect to wait. Just rebuilt into much more seating. They could have done a better job on the construction. It looks like it's 30 years old. But it's only about 7 years old. You order at the oyster bar and pay at the register. It's almost on the honor system
