Very good food and super quick service! Great staff and awesome owners that are hands on. Can't recommend them enough!

Nothing fancy. This is not high-quality Japanese food. If that's what you're looking for, a location in a strip mall is probably not your best bet anyway. Yamato is meant for the working class and the college crowd.
And that's because reasonably good food at a good price. It's consistent; the food looks and tastes the same there now as it did when I first ate there over a decade ago. And -- especially if you get one of the combos -- the portions are well worth what you pay. As for me, I usually get the yakiniku/sesame chicken double combo. I can put away quite a bit of food, and yet it's still enough to make two meals for me.
If you're not the pretentious sort and you're looking for something simple and filling, stop in. I don't think you will be disappointed.
Good food for the price. Was introduced to Yamato by a friend, and it really isn't bad. Last time I got the yaki, and really enjoyed it. It certainly doesn't meet the standards of some of the other places around here (such as Miso's, my personal favorite) but it's still good and is very reasonably priced. And for me, I can usually get about 3 meals out of one entree.

Decent Food. My family and I have frequented Yamato's for the better part of 12 years, since the hubs and I were just dating. Yes, it has changed a little over the years, but at the same time, I think that is due to the fact that the owners are no longer manning the grill. The food is not as bad as it's made out to be. We've never had "authentic" Japanese cuisine so we cannot compare it to that. However, compared to other like minded eateries in the city, we prefer it to them. The food is not greasy like that we've gotten at Makato, nor is it bland like Hibachi Express. The hubs always gets the sesame chicken (which can come out dry depending on who is on the grill) or the yaki. I vary between the yaki, the shrimp, a combo of those two or the scallops and outside of the times I was preggers I've never had a bad dish there!
You get enough with one plate to feed two people so we always just split our plates with our kids, allowing the four of us to eat there for around $20, give or take counting tax/tip. Sometimes if we both order cheap we even add an extra side of zucchini (this is by far my fave, even over the carrots).
Really unless you just enjoy the fire show by going to Misaki's down the road, you're not going to be disappointed.
Good if you know what to avoid. Basically if you like sesame chicken you probably won't like the dish here. I had it once but never would again - it's not like most Japanese/Chinese places.
That being said it is one of my preferred restaurants in JC because of the portion size compared to the cost and the Chef's special is the only thing I'll get. The Chef's special is either Spicy chicken or beef and is delicious. Even for those who are hesitant about spicy food's (like my grand mother and wife) love it. Have also ordered the scalops and steak which also was very good.
Over all very positive experience, especially if you know what to avoid. :-)
Love this place. I love this place. Maybe it doesn't represent real Japanese food but we're not in Japan. I always get the Steak and Chicken with lots of shrimp sauce and it's awesome. Even the carrots are great!!!
Great food! Great prices! Who cares if it doesn't resemble Japanese. Those idiots that want authentic Japanese move to Japan. Your kind is not wanted around here.
