We are camping at nearby Palmetto State Park but got rained on so decided to stow the camp stove and drive into town for dinner. Mr Taco was a godsend: warm atmosphere, polite staff, and tasty food.
We got three dishes: I ordered tortilla soup (super fresh ingredients with delicious, rich broth). My husband got the mole enchiladas (good sauce and chicken inside the curb tortillas was cooked to perfection). My son got the al pastor street tacos (5 small tacos made on corn tortillas with meat, cilantro and onion). The word I'll use to describe this place is "authentic," because the dishes taste like secret family recipes from Old Mexico, a welcome change from greasy Tex-Mex food. The prices were affordable too!
If it's still raining in the morning, we may come back for breakfast!
Decided to stop in and check out Mr Taco.
We have passed it dozens of times and this was the time to give it a try.
It's not usually the star of the show but the chips were beyond good, they were like crispy little clouds. The salsa had a decent flavor with a bit of heat. Not the best, but overall it will get the job done.
They have a decent sized menu with something for just about anyone. As the name suggests they sell a lot of tacos which so far are really good.
Appetizers :
Chile Con Queso - 3/10
The queso was pretty lackluster, just a basic queso with no real depth of flavors.
Tacos :
Al Pastor - 8/10
Had the pastor on flour with cilantro, lime & onions.
This is up there as far as pastor goes, super tender with an awesome flavor.
Carne Guisada - 10/10
Had the Carne Guisada on flour with no extras, this place has a Guisada as good as mine. It was the best I have ever had at a restaurant.
Bean, Cheese & Potato - 10/10
Had 2 of these and for being basic tacos they were magnificent, they make some really good tacos. I think I will just order tacos on the next trip.

Carne Guisada Plate. - 7/10
Served with rice, refried beans and 2 flour tortillas.
Once again the Guisada is phenomenal, the refried beans are pretty good, the rice has a perfect texture but is void of any flavor so some queso will be a welcomed accompaniment.
Homemade Mole Enchiladas. - 7/10
Enchiladas covered in our homemade mole sauce topped with queso fresco and sour cream.
Served with rice, refried beans and 2 flour tortillas.
Overall these mole enchiladas were decent, a slight sweetness with a note of cinnamon.
Enchilada Plate. - 4/10
2 cheese enchiladas served with guacamole salad, rice, refried beans, and 2 flour tortillas.
This was a complete letdown, the enchilada sauce and cheese were really bland, add the flavorless rice and your only hope are the beans because the guacamole was a no go. I don't really know what they did to it, but it tasted nothing like guacamole.
The BiG Burrito. - 8/10
Large flour tortilla filled with Carne Guisada, rice, and beans. Covered with red sauce and cheese.
This is one Big Burrito just like the name says. It's over 2lbs easily. The Carne Guisada delivers big time in this burrito, add the red sauce and cheese and the stage is set for awesomeness.
If you love burritos then this is one you don't want to miss.
Jr's Special - 8/10
1 crispy taco, 1 bean chalupa, and 1 beef enchilada covered with Mr Taco's enchilada sauce and cheese.
Everything on the plate was great, I enjoyed the beef enchilada way more than the cheese enchilada, the flavor of the beef gave it that little extra it needed. The taco had that perfect crunch with a very well made taco meat. The bean chalupa was really good today because of perfectly seasoned beans.
If you are in the area and hungry for Mexican food then stop on in, the restaurant is clean and has great customer service.
Some things are hit and miss but the overall the experience was a good one.
Update: After eating the enchilada sauce several times, I am starting to see its appeal. It is drastically light in flavor compared to most restaurants but it shines on dishes that have more flavor. The sauce just gets lost on a dish like the cheese enchiladas. It is a light creamy enchilada sauce, one of a kind for sure.
