I have been eating sushi since I was 6 months old. I have tried a lot of places in IL and WI. This place is in my top 3. The sushi was fresh, high quality, and was labeled correctly (it is common for seafood restaurants to label fish one thing on the menu but serve something else). There were options here I have not seen anywhere else, such as bonito, albacore, and flounder. The moscato wine I had was really good and the ginger flan with caramel sauce for dessert was awesome.
Great food, atmosphere and service! I'd never had sushi before my visit to Muramoto and I was really impressed with the variety and freshness. The flavors and artsy presentation made Muramoto more of an experience than a meal.
Exceptional every single time. I am a very harsh critic and have not once been able to find the slightest criticism with the food. I've had a few severs before who were not the best I've had. Sat for 10 mins with no drink before having to flag someone down. But that is usually not the case. Not every server is equal. Food A+, atmosphere A-, friendliness A, overall service B, overall score A+. One of my very favorite places in all of Madison.
1 week living in a new city, and I'm so glad I stumbled across this place!
The sushi is outstanding - some of the freshest fish I have had in Wisconsin. They have a large sushi menu, prices are standard and the rolls are HUGE. Between my girlfriend and I we typically eat 4 rolls. Here, was can barely finish 3!
If you are gluten free, they do offer gluten free soy sauce!
Inside decor is cute - it's definitely an smaller more intimate place. Lots of reclaimed wood. Cute spot for a date or dinner with friends.
HIGHLY recommend. Plus, it's in a great area of downtown Madison.
Muramoto is an excellent spot to get sushi and Japanese small plates. I highly recommend getting the tempura king crab with truffled bearnaise sauce if it's available. Everything I've ever had there is fantastic. I have a black cod dish which is a highlight. They have an amazing dessert which is a strawberry spring roll and ginger ice cream. All of their cocktails are good and they have a great selection of wine. The restaurant is in a great location and the staff is attentive and delightful. I used to do and all you can eat sushi night which was very fun and tested the limits of our stomachs. I don't think they do that anymore. I know they also opened a location at hilldale, which I did not think it was as good as downtown.

Best bahn mi in town, although not a traditional one. Everything is bursting with bold flavors that are very addicting. Great lunch specials, only during the week. And lots of imaginative sushi rolls, some with a local twist.
Great sushi and sashimi place in Madison downtown. This was first place to visit this location. But they well done the quality control almost same as the other location in hilldale mall.
Sweet shrimp is good.
Unagi is also good.
But uni from hokaido Japan is fare. I dont think this was hokaido uni. Less fresh, less sweet and creamy than I expected.
Service was also just fair.. That is why I want to grade only 4 star for this location. But many reason to expect to visit.
This decision is over 3 years in the debating but I think I'd put Muramoto Downtown at the top of the list for Madison sushi. It's always been in the top 2, but has managed to balance classic/edomae offerings with more inventive and/or American stand-bys without compromising quality/consistency or outrageous pricing. It hasn't embraced a fully sushi-centric identity, which has pros (fried tofu is a guilty pleasure, and the poke can be a change of pace) and cons (no omakase), but it'll be an enjoyable meal. If you can't go to CHI or MSP, this is (as far as I know) the best sushi option around.
Our favorite upscale sushi restaurant in Madison. I hope they open up soon! Small and intimate space...great for a date night. Really tasty rolls and interesting specialty rolls, on the pricier side but definitely worth it.
