I’ve been a regular at The Cupboard since my parents were in the hospital at Methodist University in early February. My family always enjoyed the atmosphere and the southern comfort food during what was a difficult few months. Thankfully, my parents are doing much better these days. The staff at The Cupboard have always treated their customers like family. That’s why I keep coming back. I was surprised they were closed today, but I think that’s great. Shows they really care about their employees to give them the day off after what must’ve been an extremely busy Thanksgiving lunch yesterday. I highly recommend The Cupboard to those who want good food, a comfortable atmosphere and very friendly attentive service.
Good Midtown spot for some good Southern cooking. Sample the veggies with a vegetable plate, or choose one of the meats of the day. Other menu items too, but don't pass up the Southern fare.Best corn muffins/sticks in town.
Before we left home, I did my typical research for restaurant reviews. Since we were traveling over a holiday, I called ahead to inquire about the prices, reservations, etc. I called The Cupboard Restaurant and the kind woman that answered the phone confirmed that they would be open Thanksgiving Day and that they had a meat and three veggie plate for $11.51. I asked if that was the price for Thanksgiving and she said yes. I remarked that I expected it to be more since it was Thanksgiving and she said if it was good enough to charge in May then it was good enough to charge in November. I knew we had to visit.
We arrived and Memphis from Dallas and went straight to the restaurant. There was a line out the door but everyone coming out was saying it was definitely worth the wait. They also had someone come out with some warm cornbread muffins to whet our appetite and they were yummy.
The Cupboard restaurant has been a Memphis tradition for 70+ years. It has a down home diner feel where you would expect all the locals to hang out. It is a Memphis’ favorite casual home-cooking eatery. They will not accept reservations, but are always popular, so keep that in mind when planning your day.
I ordered the turkey, stuffing, cucumber and tomato salad, cranberry sauce and macaroni and cheese. I skipped dessert as we were planning on eating again later but it was all delicious and the wait staff was very friendly.
If you enjoy down-home cooking and are okay with a no-frills atmosphere then you will love the great food and great prices at The Cupboard. I would definitely try this again on my next visit to Memphis.
Good basic food in nice atmosphere
All the home cooked favorites
Reasonable priced and good service
Can't go wrong
Corn bread is good and air conditioning works well
Good Country cooking!. I just tried this place recently due to a friends recommendation. I ordeded the chicken fried chicke, mashed potatoes with white gravy, fried green tomatoes, and squash. Definitely not the best fried green tomatoes by any means but everything else was good! Particularly the chicken fried chicken! I give it a 4 outta 5!
Its OK..... This place is a long time local favorite in Mid town area.... The food is OK.... Service is mediocre.... Prices are reasonable...
I really love this place food is good the price is nice and I love. my waitress mary
and the staff is pretty good at remembering your face
Good food and great service.
Excellent!. I love The Cupboard. It has a great family atmosphere. I eat there 3-4 times a week! I strongly urge you to try this place and even try it again if you have had a bad experience for they are under new management. The food has always been delicious but they have really stepped up the past few months. I really love there smothered pork chops and the friend green tomatoes. If you are looking for a good home cooked meal , this is the place to go!
So goooood!. I ate here for lunch today, it was the best meal i have had in a long time! two thumbs up
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!. Delicious food, wonderful atmosphere, and real southern cooking! i was so surprised the mashed potatoes were really homemade! this place puts cracker barrel to shame.. i would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for real memphis southern cooking!!! i had a wonderful lunch experience!
Good but avoid the "red eye" gravy.
A Memphis institution!!
This place will be here for your grandkids to enjoy. My family has been coming to the Cupboard since the 70s or 80s when it was located further East on Union Avenue.
I met some friends here for a business lunch yesterday and was again impressed by the place. Seated immediately, the decor has a down home feel and atmosphere. You’re gonna feel comfortable I assure you.
I had the standard daily meat and three special with blackened catfish, pinto beans, corn pudding, and Italian spinach. Son, when I tell you it was good, you just don’t know unless you’ve been here. Fish cooked just right with spices and fresh-squeezed lemon juice. Italian spinach cooked perfect with zesty Parmesan cheese. Corn pudding like your grandmother used to make. And pinto beans with incredible seasoning.
The waitress was super nice and serves our food quickly. She kept our glasses full as well, which I appreciated. They know how to take care of you here, and don’t skip the jarred yummies near the door. Wow they look awesome.
This was a very southern kind of restaurant. The people were friendly and the inside looked clean and inviting. The fact there is an armed security standing outside suggests the area isn't great. What I didn't like was the price tag. My food cost $16 for 2 pieces of chicken and 2 veggies. A slice of pie is $6. To me, that's a bit expensive for such a basic meal. My food probably would've tasted better if it was piping hot.
Incredible and legitimate Southern restaurant experience.
I had the four veggie plate with Italian Spinach, Mashed Potatoes w/ gravy, Macaroni & Cheese, and Buttered Squash. My friend had the Chicken & Dressing with corn pudding and fried green tomatoes. Each item was flavorful, seasoned and fresh.
On top of the quality food, the service was friendly and expedient. Certainly easy to see why this place has been a traditional Memphis mainstay since 1943. Will definitely be making return trips to this fine establishment.
Friendly staff, quick service for being lunch time, food was fresh and tasty. I had the Ribeye steak (Cavallo special).
A family owned American diner with an old charm and vibrant environment. It was packed when I visited for taking out my brunch. I stopped by, ordered and waited inside until they gave my food. However, you can call them and get the food ready when you reach. The front desk ladies/ staff/ owner (?) were very charming and welcoming. The food was good. It was a basic home style breakfast with eggs ans sausage and potato. The biscuits were freshly baked and truly southern. I loved the sausage patties, with a hint of spice and heat. I added a cup of coffee which was very basic. I will definitely go back and eat there. Highly recommend if you want to have some southern hospitality.
Update: I went back in Sunday for brunch and everything was perfect. Me and my mom started with a cup of coffee. While my mom indulged herself in a tuna salad sandwich with a side of turnip greens, I chose to have the chicken with dressings. Mashed potato with gravy and corn pudding were the two sides. Tuna sandwich was pretty decent. So as the chicken with dressing. It was nothing fancy, but very homy and comforting. The corn pudding was something that I never tasted before. Try this if you have a sweet tooth like me. And, before we move on. I must mention about their corn muffins. These tiny muffins were served hot. They were freshly baked and very aromatic. One of the best corn bread/ muffin that I have had. It’s very lively inside, with a typical old school diner environment. Do visit them.
Great breakfast as usual, good prices, no wait time, good service, & atmosphere. Recommend!
Family enjoyed our food and experience here. The place was very busy it being a Sunday afternoon. But we were seated very quickly. Our host and server were very polite and the food came out hot in a timely manner. Great tasting southern food in a friendly, inviting environment.. What more can you ask for?.. Will go back again when we revisit Memphis.
Went at 7am for breakfast and it was my first time visiting. The atmosphere was nice, the waitress was great and the food was good, bountiful and inexpensive. The only issue I had was there wasn't any cell service. Though the music was descent, it would've been better to have some visual activity while I dined alone.
We’re stuffed!! The food was hot and tasty. I would have stayed for dessert but was much too full from the nice sized portions. If you’re around Memphis already or just passing through, definitely stop by and see what the daily specials are. You won’t be disappointed. Service was quick and staff was super friendly. 🥘
Had a business lunch at The Cupboard. It's kind of a tight fit parking-wise. The food is good. I had breakfast for lunch. Tanisha (I hope I'm spelling her name right!) was our server. We came in during an incredibly busy time, and she was both great at her job and had a great attitude despite the rush. Tanisha made an otherwise ordinary experience great.
