The food that I had there was excellent. I very much enjoyed the sandwich I had made, even though they did not have the stuff to make the first two sandwiches I asked for. The muffins were the bomb! Little pricy, but what do you expect at a hospital?
The vegetarian avacado sandwich at around $7 is delicious. They're patient and helpful. As an alternative to the maze to the basement cafeteria, this is the convenient place for trendier food like paninis, smoothies, pastry, and grab-n-go. A natural-light patio feel dining area off the atrium. When you have to be at the hospital, this place can take the edge off of that sometimes awful feeling of bad things happening. Always good to hire clean-freaks in restaurants and get that health rating higher; and servers who know to chat less with each other and more with customers. Little spendy on small items--convenience pricing. Also high-counter seating on windows for solo customers to eat and go. Makes you feel a bit like you're not in the hospital.
They have a nice variety of bagels, cookies, croissants, and muffins (those were alphabetized, didja see that?). They also have some soups and sandwiches. Some days they are understaffed. The coffee is made behind the counter, then placed out front, so it may be cold.
So, working at and for UAB has its perks and one of them is Au Bon Pain. We are able to get free water(best water in the whole hospital, plus refills) and their great selection of food items and drinks, from pastries to sandwiches and salads.
