I have now been exposed to the deliciousness of the banh mi sandwich.
So cheap. So good. So addictive. Me want more.
A friend and I enjoyed a secret lunchtime rendezvous here today at Banh Mi Saigon. I told her she could guide me in the delectable ways of the Vietnamese sandwich as I was open to trying anything. Oh, the things she showed me. The taste sensations she made me experience. I'm in lust.
Crazy good sandwich in a crispy crunchy hoagie roll filled with bbq pork and grilled chicken. Both sandwiches we shared also had fresh crisp veggies in them, and the meats had such a tangy teriyaki sweetness to them. Even though the sandwiches felt light to the touch and airy they were actually quite filling. I made an absolute mess of the floor below me biting into these things, but I didn't care. I was an eating machine as I starved myself all day for this.
The place itself is pretty sparse but clean with no real table seating except for a few counters and high chairs along the wall. What more could you expect when the sandwiches cost less than $5 each! They also have some hot drinks, cold sodas, teas, etc.
But why the heck is there a jewelry store in here? Sometimes Chinatown is a strange place indeed.

Delicious banh mi sandwiches on fresh baguettes, packed with pickled daikon & carrot, fresh cilantro and your pick of meat and veggie options. My favorite is #4 with pork and pâté. Ask for "spicy," and you'll get jalapeños and a squirt of sriracha sauce. Cool off with a basil seed and coconut milk drink!
Incredible sandwich. Crunchy radish, crunchy carrot, fresh cucumber, cilantro, BBQ chicken, fresh bread. And when they ask I you want it spicy, they mean it.
Great for vegetarians - try the vegetarian sandwich with mushrooms, tofu, baby corn and make it spicy (jalapeños). Mock curry chicken also tasty. Only $5 each for huge sandwich!
Manhattan's Best Banh Mi. I was definitely fine with their old location. You had to walk farther, wait longer and endure the bus fumes. Also they would run out of bread at around 11:30 AM so you had to get your butt down there early if you wanted to snag one. BUT! - they were surely a foodgasm on a bun and well worth the sacrifice and inconvenience. Regardless, even though the new place seems a little different from the old, it's still the best banh mi you will find in Manhattan.
The quicker service and closer location to the major subways, not to mention the ability to get one in the afternoon are great developments as far as the new location goes, but the ones from the old place just seemed to be better. Maybe it was the freshness factor or the old dictate that as a food place upgrades, the quality tends to drop, but by no means are these banh mi bad! On the contrary, they're great! My main gripe is merely that there just seems to be a slight bit less of the great stuff inside of them than there used to be and they taste a little more `pre-fab' than they did from the old place.
Still though, they rock my world. I could seriously live off these things forever and if I lived closer to Chinatown I most probably would!

Best banh mi ever. After about 10 minutes in line, we finally receive our sandwich wrapped in wax paper inside a brown paper bag and cut in half. If you order this for yourself you can eat the first half and save the other half for a late afternoon snack if you'd like.
I immediately notice that the banh mi saigon has sweet reddish crumbled pieces of dried marinated pork on the bottom layer, with hints of fish sauce, something that is not found in any of the banh mi shops in Orlando. Usually there is the banh mi dac biet in Orlando which is a special combo of all the cold cuts, but the banh mi saigon is served with cha lua and also this pork
Andrew notes that he loves how fresh everything is and how distinct each of the tastes in the sandwich is. This is his first time eating banh mi, I think I just popped his banh mi cherry, and he likes it. Andrew notices also that the way they keep the pickled daikon and carrots from soaking through the sandwich is that they wrapped it inside of the cha lua pork meat cold cut to block the juices from seeping through.
This scintillating sandwich is one of the top five banh mi I have had in my life, beating all the banh mi in Orlando for sure and rivaling a few out west in Texas and California (as about close to Vietnam that you can get). The crisp outer layer and soft inner bread of the baguette, the fresh slivers of cucumber and pickled vegetables and meat cuts with a hint of fish sauce, all come together in perfect harmony. All is well in the universe.
Vietnamese Sandwich / Jewelry Store. You heard right -- the best Vietnamese sandwiches are located on Mott street in the back part of a jewelry store. The Chinese sausage sandwich is super yummy as is the pork sandwich. Super cheap too -- you can save enough to buy some bling on your way out!
This bakery was very busy. Many customers called ahead and came in to pick up their sandwiches. Others waited for their orders to be prepared on site.

You may have to do a double take when arriving at Banh Mi Saigon Bakery, because I did. I saw the sign awning above that showed its name but at first glance inside I thought it was a jewelry store!(?) Looking deeper into the store I find the Banh Mi Saigo
Many people will tell you to go here when you talk about banh mi and Manhattan in the same breath. "Ooooh how fun! You walk through a jewelry store!" they will say. And while it is actually sort of fun doing this, the place is packed to the brim and in mo
Still my go-to place for banh mi after all these years! Service is quick, staff are friendly and store is kept clean. A good variety of drink, dessert and sandwich options. Only a couple minutes walk from major subway stations.
The prices are still reasonable and the ingredients are fresh. I wish there was more filling in the past, but there's still enough to mix with the baguette - instead of having the bread overpower everything.
$9.50 for a curry chicken Banh Mi. The chicken & veggies come on an extra large hero with a fantastic bite.
You will be WOWED by the flavors making you swoon. Spice level is optional, I prefer mild spicy 🌶️.
The place is not much to look at and take out only. The line tends to get long on weekends. Better to call ahead & only takes 10 minutes preparation. Definitely a hot spot on Grand St Little Italy 🇮🇹
Overall Thoughts: A quick and easy spot to grab an affordable, delicious banh mi and other Vietnamese staples in the Little Italy / Chinatown area. All banh mis are under $10 (for now), and the counter service was quick and friendly. The interior is designed mostly for takeout, but there is some limited seating along the walls. The line was short and it wasn't too crowded when I arrived around 1:30pm on a Saturday.
Food I tried:
- "Spicy" BBQ Pork Banh Mi (4.7/5): This banh mi was delicious-- the bread was fresh and pillowy, the veggies were crisp and crunchy, and the grilled pork meat was tender and flavorful. I liked that they added a slice of cold cut in there too; most spots don't do that if you order grilled meat, but it helped enhance the flavor. It was only called "spicy" due to the addition of jalapeños.
- Shrimp Summer Rolls (4.5/5): $8 order comes with 3 large summer rolls that are fresh and tightly wrapped. They tasted good-- pretty standard, light, and delicious.

My go-to banh mi spot in Manhattan. Growing up, my parents always grabbed sandwiches from here each time they were in Chinatown. I usually recommend the #1 from here to ease my non-Vietnamese friends into banh mi. Some people aren't too fond of all the cold cuts most traditional banh mi contains. Unlike other places where their #1 usually includes multiple cold cuts, the #1 here is mostly barbecued pork and a slice of cha lua. My siblings and husband prefer the #1 from here, whereas I crave the traditional #13 more often. This time, I wanted something less meaty, so I ordered their Banh Mi Chay. The tofu and veggies themselves were very delicious, but I felt like they would have been better on rice than in a sandwich. I will continue to branch out and try a different sandwich each time I visit.
AMAZING banh mi !!!! The baguette was good, the veggies were really tasty and that pork !! Oh my. Everything combined was perfect, really my favorite banh mi in NYC

Best bánh mì in Chinatown!! I always get the regular bbq pork (#1) with spicy sauce and it never let me down, very flavorful. They accept both cash and card now and it gets pretty busy around lunch time. Quick service tho and they have standing area to eat.
Amazing Banh Mi! Everything was super fresh and the bread was crispy. The only thing is I didn’t realize it didn’t come with Pate and it was definitely missing that flavor! Overall amazing though, I would just add the pate if you like that!
We order a Pork banh Mi and was very tasty. The shrimp rolls were big and perfectly cooked. The sauce was perfect between sweet and savory. They have a small bar to eat. The service was pretty fast.
When I had the first bite of the Banh Mi Saigon (Signature), I was deported back to bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City through my taste buds. The pickled vegetables tasted so authentic and the pork was grilled to perfection.
The Goi Cuon (I found out its called Summer Rolls here) was made with fresh ingredients, you definitely HAVE to dip it with the sauce given to you. If you are brave, you should definitely have it with their chilli sauce.
Staff was helpful too as they provided a chair for my partner when she was feeling dizzy.
A must try in Chinatown!
Banh Mi Saigon is one of the best in town. It is very busy at lunch time, but the service is quick and friendly. And the price is affordable.
