Some smokin' barbeque!. My wife and I were in Petaluma to see my favourite Australian rock band (onya Hoodoo Gurus!) at McNear's Mystic Theatre and we wanted to get a bite before the show. It's cool that McNear's has tables in the music hall and they let you pack in your eats. We reckoned that the food would be so-so, like most pub grub, but we were there to rock, not dine.

Hot damn, though -- McNear's makes some good meat. The Memphis pork BBQ had such excellent smoke flavour and was piled so high that we popped the excess in our cooler and drove with it all the way back to Canada. We've eaten barbecue all over the U.S., Australia and a few joints here in Vancouver, and this was so excellent we felt sad when the last was gone. Their meaty chili, with big chunks of chili-grind beef -- a cut that you don't see all that often outside Texas -- was just a side dish with the pork BBQ, but it would be worth ordering a bowl on its own.

In a way, I hate finding a good roadhouse like McNear's that's so far from where I live. Luckily, we have San Francisco connections and like the kind of musicians McNear's books. This restaurant is the kind of place where, even if it was a band I was marginally interested in, I'd go to hear it just for another excuse to visit McNear's.

Great Place, Great Location. Right in the heart of Petaluma. Great for my whole family, and plenty of tasty treats to choose from. Me and my wife came for a show this past weekend without the kids, and has a even better night life with awesome acts at the theatre right next door
