We live in North Carolina and have been following Merchant Oyster Co here on Facebook since before the restaurant was open. Finally we were able to visit on our most recent trip to Pittsburgh. Right off the bat the bartender was engaged with us and very friendly. I spoke their shucker at the oyster bar which is prominent right as you enter. He was very knowledgeable in all the right areas and answered our questions on salinity, size, harvest area etc. We followed our oyster sampler by trying the clear chowder and their version of a ciopinno style chowder. Both we're absolutely delicious. To finish off our meal we tried the stuffed clam and lobster roll. They offer the lobster roll both hot or cold. We opted to try it hot after the bartender mentioned that the lobster was sauteed in brown butter and Old Bay served on a perfectly grilled roll. The large clam shell was stuffed with a nice spicy mixture of stuffing and meat. Overall perfect lunch and it was evident that they know and care about their menu from top to bottom. Kudos to the staff that hosted us. We received plenty of attention and also space to enjoy our meal. Wish we lived closer, but Merchant Oyster Co. will be on our list of places to dine at every time we are back home in Pittsburgh.
You won't find a better atmosphere in Lawrenceville! The oyster selection is the best in the city, the staff is exceptional, the bar has a wonderful selection of cocktails, wine, and beer, and the clam stuffies and lobster roll are to die for!!
Stopped in today (Wednesday) for a late lunch. Started with a few oysters from James River, VA which were awesome. I loved their horseradish/cocktail combo they have bottled. I also got a cup of the clam chowder, which was amazing....and it comes in an actual mug which was great. I split the lobster roll with my girlfriend which, despite the $23 price tag, was worth every cent. Great beer selection and excellent service. I will definitely be back and recommend to anyone.
