Food is decent. Nothing spectacular, but just solid. I've had a couple different subs and I've enjoyed each one.
Couple of oddities about this place.
1) You get fries with your sub, but only if you're eating at the restaurant. If you get it to go, you have to pay for your fries separately. Seems like a bizarre policy.
2) It is cash only. There is an ATM in the restaurant...but just be aware of their cash only policy. Personally, I find it to be annoying, but there are more "cash only" restaurants in Pittsburgh than I've seen anywhere else.
Even with those 2 things, it's still good food, fairly fast, and a big enough place that you'll have no issue finding a seat.
Surprised!. After leaving the Squirrel Hill library I realized I was hungry and just wanted a sandwich, a comfortable chair and a table to read my paperback mystery. I decided to go across the street to Uncle Sam's but without any great expectations ( no pun intended). I was all set for a mediocre sub but to my surprise I really enjoyed my cheesesteak. The sub was large and overflowed with fried onions, green peppers, hot peppers and lots of steak. The mass of fries made me feel guilty as I gobbled them up swathed in ketchup. The young staff behind the orderind counter were polite and efficient, and the prices were reasonable considering the size of the portions. Ok - its not the healthiest of all food but once a year one can splurge on calories. In a nutshell Uncle Sam was damn good!
Love this place!. I have had their cheese steak in many variations, and their veggie subs as well. Each and every one was delicious! Also their bread is always soft and tasty. i have never been let down by uncle Sam! Affordable and sooo good.
Great Subs. Probably the best cheese steak you'll find in Pittsburgh. I enjoy all of their locations. I do not enjoy their cash-only policy, however.
Better than I expected. I'm not totally sure why, but this place is amazing. I thought it looked really average before I tried it, but the food beat my expectations by far. I'm vegetarian, and they have 5 or 6 different veggie subs that are real vegetarian subs, not meat subs hold-the-meat. The veggies are cooked really well, the bread is fluffy, crispy, and fresh, and everyone I know who has tried them falls in love. If you eat in, you get free fries too. A lot of them. The sweet potato fries are also worth trying. I usually only eat half the sub and save the other half for dinner so I can savor it for longer. The staff is also friendly and has joked around with me before after I ordered food.
Best cheese steak sub in Pittsburgh! Same owners as the original Sams Subs in Oakland.
Mmm. Fries.. Their fries are great. The sandwiches are great for lunch. They are large enough that you can eat half and take half home for dinner. Prices are reasonable, as well.
Great subs - rival those at the other end of the state. Beware - they are not a "late night" place. They close early in the evening and on busy weekend evenings - they have been known to run out of their bread.
Sweet potato fries. Title says it all. That's all you need to know.
Whether Squirrel Hill or Robinson, I’ve always gotten wonderful food from Uncle Sam’s and their turkey sub is definitely the meal I’d miss the most if I ever moved away from Pittsburgh. I’m fairly certain that their fries are solely responsible for me weighing about seven pounds more than I should, but I’m married so luckily my physique doesn’t matter anymore.
I love the sandwiches of this place. Portions are big, the sandwiches are tasty, prices are reasonable and people who are taking the order are cool. I go there regularly.
A Pittsburgh, staple have been going here since highschool. Love the bread and hot(temperature) Italian sub. Good spot to stop at after a couple drinks at the squirrel hill cafe.
Looked up and went here to reminisce the sandwiches from ~25 years ago as a student and heard from him they still taste as good as before!! It’s just today the Roma tomato sandwich was not available. Fast and friendly service. Good/flexible options for vegetarians, I loved the spinach/broccoli one, will add jalapeño or some spicy sauce next time. The breads are softer than the other sandwich places which worked out well for our picky eater.
It's always amazing. I haven't had Uncle S in over a year. But the food is always A1! It's hard to find parking in Squirrel Hill, so when the opportunity comes, I gotta get it.
I had to stop in today for a steak and egg sub and the sandwich and fries were delicious- this crew today was definitely on their game. I stop in when back in town and this meal among the best I've yet to have here.
Our favorite local spot. Good view of the Forbes Murray crossing. My husband and I go there frequently in the evenings and enjoy looking at the happening Forbes through the window. We love their subs, especially the Uncle Sam Ultra. If you eat in store, it’ll come with fries. However, if you order a take out, you’ll miss their fries and sometimes they mention it and sometimes they don’t. It made us really disappointed once as we love their fries. Good spot to bring relatives and friends who visit you to give them local flavor. We never disappoint our visitors when we bring them here.
Passing through on my way to ohio. Delicious Subs. Had the cheesesteak and the cheeseburger subs. Both were amazing.
Quick turnaround on orders. They now take credit cards!!! Different sub options for veg heads a plus. About 25% of our takeout orders have been screwed up (missing an item, incorrect sub) and also the food is so yummy it doesn't keep us from ordering.
Excellent subs very authentic great portion and the fries are to die for! They’re like McDonald’s consistency but real !
They needed some menu photos... see attached
The subs are just above average but they offer you free fries when dine in and the fries are amazing
