This place is way cute! Fantastic space indoors. Wonderful outdoor space with different sections. The staff is friendly and helpful. Really great beer list. The food is wonderful. Very diverse menu. Nice spot on the corner next to the University Heights sign. Will definitely be back to this gem!
Still thinking about the lamb fries from here because they were so good; they had the perfect amount of crisp and flavor. Definitely recommend eating upstairs for the best ambiance (and views ofc).Wish there were a few more vegetarian/vegan options though.
There was a line of people (and dogs,) waiting to get in Kairoa before they opened on a glorious sunny Saturday. That probably says everything you need to know about this place. This was my first visit and I will surely be back. The upstairs patio is fun and inviting. The service was impeccable and friendly. And the food and drinks were delicious.
Next time I bring my dog to enjoy this hip University Heights spot…in the hope he makes it on the famous “dog of the month” wall. 🐶

Shrimp n grits 5/5 - huge pieces of shrimps. Good grits
Crispy brussels 5/5 - cooked to perfect texture. Thick small pieces of bacon sprinkled in. Perfect acidity level
Mushroom bulgogi fried 5/5 - sauces profiles worked so well. Generous with toppings. Despite being covered, the fries were still crispy. Wow! A must get!
Crispy lamp lollipops 5/5 - perfect panko crisp on the outside, tender juicy lamb on the inside. How do they do it so well?!
Mac + cheese 3/5 - i thought it was alright, but my friend loved it

2023: My neighborhood brewery with New Zealand motifs. Most of the beers are better than average. I am partial to the kolsch and lager. The food is always good. This time we had the lamb fries (rate 8//10) and the spring roll with peanut sauce (9/10). Staff is always friendly. Modern spacious indoor and roof top dining makes for a relaxing and fun feel at the same time. Fire pits too.
I can’t say enough good things about Kairoa and their team, Carly especially. In late September my husband and I had our wedding’s welcome party at the Kairoa rooftop and it was the best decision. Our guests commented on the amazing atmosphere with the fire pits throughout the patio, the great finger foods (those bacon wrapped dates were a hit), and the friendly staff. We all enjoyed good beer and had the best time!
Great beer and amazing vegan options! Almost everything on the menu can be veganified. The Holy Ghost sandwich and vegan fish and chips are stellar! Homemade ketchup slaps too and all the aiolis are vegan by default. Highly recommend if you’re looking for vegan options and good brews in the University Heights neighborhood!
Dog Friendly. Big TVs on, but not to loud. Service that gets it just right. Good variety of unique beers and a little bit of wine from New Zealand.
And pretty good food in pretty good quantity. We've been twice in a month because it just fits like a glove. It's a nice change from some of the SD breweries that are very over the top about passion for beer. Kairoa just exist for you to have a good time, drink a decent beer, have some good food and relax.
Great atmosphere, great food and great rooftop. It never gets too crowded either. Parking in this part of town is very difficult.
We went here for dinner on our vacation and really enjoyed it! The food was absolutely amazing! I had the risotto with salmon. We had the friendliest waitress who let me talk her ear off and always had a new drink on the way once we finished the one we had. The manager was also super friendly! The rooftop was absolutely stunning and they had heaters at all the tables! I will definitely come back next time we visit San Diego!
