While vacationing in San Francisco, met up with cousin for early dinner at Golden Star. It's a family-run business. One of the elders waited on us. We asked why sliced pork or sliced chicken wasn't shown in the soup on menu. Waiter said meat retains flavor and texture as a side dish. "Try it!" So we did. And the various flavors (broth, cilantro, bok choy, and sliced pork) all came through. Delicious. Some very nice spring rolls in rice "paper" also excellent. So, like most Vietnamese restaurants serve veggies on side, this one also serves meat (on request) on side. I see the light!
Fantastic! Loved it. Low key. Inexpensive. Fresh, delicious Pho! Would definitely be back if we lived here. Ordered beef strip pho. Was fantastic.
This place has a fast service . i ordered nam bo vien and it was good and satisfying. They bring some tea and vegetables with your order. And you dont face any extras at your bill. Clients seem to be from neighborhood. And the atmosphere of the resturant cozy.
Visiting the City from the Midwest & had to get a Pho experience before leaving so of course I head to Chinatown. This place is straightforward and no frills in terms of decor. You walk in and it's filled with Asian diners, Good sign. I had the Pho Tai Nam and it was fantastic. The broth was beautifully rich in flavor and light in texture as it should be. The aromatics were fresh and crisp. The thinly sliced beef strips were delicate, plentiful and a wonderful compliment to the broth. We also had the grilled pork & imperial rolls. The pork was lightly seasoned and finished with a delightful smoky char flavor. The fried rolls were delicious with lots of flavor. It was accompanied with rice and fresh vegetables. Solid traditional Vietnamese flavors. I'll have to make another trip back before we leave the city.
Was craving a Pho Ga and stumbled across this place. Great Pho but even better spring rolls.
Chicken was delicious and noodles were cooked perfectly, broth was tasty. I would definitely return.
Great authentic Pho. No frills, efficient, friendly service, clientele seems predominantly local neighborhood folks.
Good food without the extras. Don't go looking for atmosphere. Food is delicious; served quickly. Just what I was looking for. Had the #53 vermicelli chicken with lemongrass.
Best Raw Lemon Beef. I crave Golden Star's raw lemon beef (#24 on the menu). It comes covered in lemon juice, peanuts, cilantro, basil, and spices. No other lemon beef compares to this mouth watering delight. I also love the beef stew (#32) although the beef can be a bit fatty which the owner says is how the locals like it. It is delicious in its hearty broth, with carrots, onions, cilantro, and fall apart in your mouth I beleive brisket. The Pho is also great as well as the Bun. Actually I like everything I have ever ordered. Be warned, they do not accept credit cards.
Very friendly staff. They were initially unsure about my wife’s guide dog, but once they understood her role and the importance of her service, they were very accommodating. It was the first time they experienced having a guide dog in the restaurant. The food was very tasty and it came out quickly. This was a recommendation from a few locals in the neighborhood and we are grateful for the suggestion.
Tasty food, served quick, and the price is right. Not a place for vegetarians. Lots of locals eating here that's a great sign.
If you are looking for a decent BBH(Bun Bo Hue) is SF, this is a spot. Truthfully, it isn’t the best I’ve ever had but it definitely hits the spot for the craving for a great price might I add. service is just as a normal mom & pop shop, so don’t expect too much!
Four stars for Golden Star. I come here quite often when I’m in downtown and want noodles. Most recently, I got their #23 bun tom hue, their spicy shrimp soup noodle, $16.50. Lots of shrimp, decent broth that wasn’t that spicy, and awesome noodles that are thicker than usual.

Updated review 11/22/2023: Golden Star is the best Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown! I used to come on a weekly basis back in the early 2000's through 2013 from Embarcadero Center 3, where I used to work. It was an awesome place to meet up with co-workers. The kitchen and service were always fast, you know for the 1 hour limit lunch break customers. Today we had two bowls of #1 house special pho $14, #25 imperial rolls (cha gio) full order $10, #32 Vietnames beef carpaccio (bo tai chanh) full order $15 and a seafood crispy noodles $17. One bit of sad news. The tall waiter no longer works here. The other waiter said he left for a hotel job. Service was excellent as always.
Outdoor dining 5/3/2021. Indoor dining was not available. I'm so happy to see the same staff working here. We've been coming here since the early 2000's. The quality of the food and service remains the same. This was one of my favorite restaurants to eat at when I'm was working down by the Embarcaderos. It was such a treat to come here on Fridays. Food by the Embarcadero area is filled with boring hipster salads and sandwiches. Love this place!
We were served the perfect pho: Clear flavorful broth, perfectly cooked rice noodles, razor thin sliced beef, and fresh savory herbs! It came out within a few minutes and we enjoyed a refreshing lemon soda with it. The price was super-affordable! Highly recommended.
This is the easiest 5 stars I gave a restaurant.
We just walked near by this restaurant and saw it has a lot of customers so we decided to try.
I had a delicious soup with meat and noodles, we had rolls with shrimps and vegan noodles.
Everything was so good, fresh, and with such an interesting authentic flavors.
The service was so good and kind. The owner gave us recommendations that seems that she knew exactly what we’re looking for.
The price is fair cause the food was a lot we couldn’t finish (and we eat a lot).
Highly recommend.
Soup noodle with chicken leg also a fabulous dish, u won’t get bored of their taste, yummy. Ice coffee is full of aroma (its after taste different from other Vietnamese restaurants in neighborhood), nice to have!
Their Vietnamese noodle is thinner and smoother than the others in Chinatown.
Has been to this place several times already, before and after pandemic. Their food has maintained the same quantity and quality as before. Will always go back if I am craving for Pho
No frills vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown, I ordered the Bun Bo Hue and it came with a perfect equal meat to noodle ratio, the broth was flavorful even though I prefer it a little spicer I just added some sriracha sauce and it was perfect. Service was good and food came out fast, would definitely come back to try other items.
