Excellent food, wonderful service, and great ambiance. Truly the best Thai food ever. Thai cuisine combined with French undertones and exquisite presentation.
I've loved Thep Phanom for many years. Can't think of anything I've ever had there that wasn't delicious. Great food, lovely service.
Best Thai in the area. And the Salmon curry is the best Thai dish I’ve ever had. Located on a quiet corner, this place can get really busy in the evenings but is pretty quiet at lunch. Friendly people and good people make this a popular neighborhood staple. The take-out is quick, but it's definitely a treat to eat in: for example, if you get the pineapple fried rice, they'll serve it to you a pineapple.
I traveled through Thailand for 29 days and fell in love with everything Thai ... Even the thick coffee. Thep Phanom brings me back there every time. Traditional Thai food and some modern flair style sides that have the heart of traditional dishes. You can't miss at this place, everything is great. Right now with the summer fruits you can also order the mango/sticky rice for dessert and that is over the top!
The place doesn't look like much from the outside but has a great atmosphere, friendly staff and great food.
The menu is not very "standard Thai" and has some nice twist to the dishes but still feel and tastes very authentic. (I wouldn't call this 'westernized' for all I know the dishes might be from a specific region in Thailand... Definitely great taste!)
Best Thai I've had in SF thus far. I ordered the pineapple rice, which was impressively served in a huge stuffed pineapple.
Incidentally, the temperature of the place was very reasonable, as well. Not too hot, as some people claim.
Best Thai food I've had in SF. We had Tofu Sate, veggie/tofu red curry, and Pad See Ew, and everything was incredible. Plus they have $2 Chang beers and $5 appetizers from 5:30-7 every night.
Ever wonder where the great chefs of SF go out to eat? This is the place. The BEST Thai food in San Francisco. Put yourself in Guy's hands and she'll knock you out. Great food.
We were a bit nervous coming in here, as it was completely empty (we went around 2pm, so it wasn't too surprising), and were pleasantly surprised by the food. We had papaya salad to start, and The Dragon Lady (? prawns stuffed with crab) as well as the pumpkin and shrimp curry to share. Rice came out in these cute bamboo holders
There is no more authentic Thai food in the area. Owned and operated by a Thai family, Thep Phanom is a hidden gem. All their dishes are intricately crafted and presented in true Thai tradition. The ingredients are fresh, and the flavors as authentic as the decor.
Asked if we would rather have brown or white rice with our meal. We figured it was included in the meal. When the bill came they had charged us for it, it wasn't included, and wouldn't do anything about this. Otherwise a nice and very traditional Thai restaurant, not westernised at all.
This place is right on the closest corner of commercial activity to my new California residence, so I figured we should probably try it out as soon as possible and branch out from there. My Thai food experience is someone limited to one restaurant back East that everyone proclaimed to be "the best" (and I wholeheartedly agree that it is some of the tastiest pad thai I've had in my 34 years), so I may be a harsh judge of character.
You know when you're a kid and you go to your friends house and their mom makes mac n cheese and its nothing like your mom's mac n cheese? The cheese is different, the macaroni is big and fat and your mom's is lean, the creaminess is all off? That's kind of how I felt about this. Granted, there's definitely more than one way to pad a thai, so I will keep an open mind, but I like my mom's mac n cheese better.
To be fair, we got takeout. The decor inside was very awesome, the staff was extremely pleasant, and the portions were huuuge. So they have that going for them. I intend to return, and branch out of my Thai comfort zone at least twice with this place. Gotta support the guy on the corner for a little bit, amirite guys?
