If you are looking for an exceptional 10 course meal at a reasonable price, this is the place for you! Although it is listed as a Vietnamese restaurant, the food is a combination of Vietnamese dishes with more familiar dishes, such as black cod, squab and lamb loin, that have a slight Vietnamese flavor. A great combination of unique dishes and familiar dishes. Without giving away all the secrets, the meal starts with a unique Vietnamese salad with a bright and flavorful vinaigrette dressing. The second course is an appetizer centered around a mild mushroom mousse and chips served on a coral piece. Very attractive. The next few dishes are also appetizers, a crab sausage, then salmon ceviche and then steak tartare. So far, six dishes and we are not even to the main courses. There were three main courses, grilled black cod, followed by a squab leg, followed by a lamb loin. All three mains were like you would have at any tasting menu, with a slight Vietnamese spin. Then we relaxed for a few minutes for the dessert, which was a light, creamy fruit filled roll with mint and dollops of raspberry sauce. And the tea at the end was flavorful and cleansing. In summary, this restaurant focuses on the food. If you like tasting menu's, this is a great place at a great value, with a great chef.

10 courses made by one of the most respected Vietnamese chefs. Every single dish is delicious, creative, and full of Vietnamese flavor. Friendly staff. Highly recommend.

I feel that this is one of those underrated restaurants in San Francisco. While the space is atypical, the food and service make up for it. There isn't any menu to peruse or any selection one can make on food, rather the chef reserves his right to surprise you. Every dish we were served was prepared with great care and presented in a classy easy. I personally enjoyed every bite with the exception of the Dorian dessert which I didn't love. I'm just not a Dorian person. Overall a great experience. It's a bit weird that you see how much you pay only at the end but I guess one is prepared to pay more than $100 when going to a place like this one. Worth the price we paid which was around $150 each.

Take what you know about Vietnamese food and throw it out the window, this is Vietnamese food like you've never experienced before. What an unbelievable experience. Internationally acclaimed Chef Khai will 'wow' you with this intimate dining experience. There is an obsessive mindfulness that is clearly communicated through the courses from start to finish. The blend of flavors, textures, and regional ingredients are so elegant and intelligent. There are both vegetarian and non-vegetarian tasting menus that you must try. I highly recommend Khai. One of the best dinners I've had - ever.

The chef makes delicious food and is a darling! Like idiots we had not given him notice that I am a vegetarian but he still managed to pull a full 10 course meal for me on such a short notice. I suggest telling him in advance though. He explains each dish with a lot of love and tells u how to eat it to enjoy the flavour.

Went to Khai for a nice dinner at 8:30 on a Friday. One thing to note, the restaurant prefers everyone to start dinner at the same time, thus the time slots. The service was good, but don't expect Gary Danko table cloth experience. On to the food, the wine and beer list was somewhat limited. Also pretty pricey considering the drink options. The first 2 dishes were decent but not spectacular. I was expecting to be disappointed at this point. Then came the Foie Gras. Which was delicious and nicely flavored with a good seer. From that point on the dinner went on overdrive. The highlights were the butter fish, lobster and lamb. The dessert was ok, but durian is an acquired taste. Overall, great value for the price. Khai was also able to accomodate a pescetarian and vegetarian menu, a delicious one at that. I'm happy that Vietnamese cuisine is hitting the fine dining scene here other than Slanted Door.

Khai is a gem that hasn't been found by most! Came here for an anniversary dinner and Chef Khai floored us with his culinary nuances. My wife is a vegetarian and he took so much care to make sure she had a great time. He gave it a personal touch and came out with every dish to explain it to us. The wine pairings complemented the food extremely well. Cannot wait to go back with friends and family. If you haven't tried Khai yet, don't waste another minute. Get a reservation already!

My husband and I randomly bumped into this restaurant on our first day in San Francisco with no reservation!! We really enjoyed this place so much. Loved every dish he served, and pricing is not bad only 115 for each individual.

The food was excellent, the owner-cook explained how the food originated and even gave ideas on how to enjoy it better. In my group there were two young children, 9 and 11, and they ate everything with total enjoyment. A very good experience for all.

Khai was phenomenal. Each dish was unique, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The 10-course meal was more than enough food and well worth the price!
