Love this place! I can't believe it isn't constantly packed; there should be a line out the door. For ten years I've been basically addicted to their panang chicken; it is simply amazing. That said, the decor isn't all it could be and I do wish that they were open for more hours. But if I ever met the owners I would just say thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I started cooking Thai food over a decade ago after falling in love with their food and not being able to afford it very often as a college student. They published a recipe in the Inlander and I read it and then I had the confidence to try cooking Thai and other food myself. Writing this is making me salivate so much I think I need to run over there right now and get my fix of delicious!
Very friendly service and very very yummy! Spiceness level is authentic, so if you are a whimp like me don't go higher than a 2!
Consistently excellent. Thai on First has the same decor it had in the late 1990's. Thankfully, another thing has stayed the same; it's terrific food. It's food has stayed consistently excellent for years.
Spokane has a lot of bad Asian restaurants. There's a strange phenomenon that happens to Asian restaurants in Spokane. An Asian restaurant will get a following and then systematically dumb down it's menu and then go down hill in quality. I've seen it happen several times. Thankfully, it hasn't happened at Thai on First.
The service is good and friendly. It's one of my favorite Thai restaurants.
Wonderful, flavorful chicken and beef salads and yummy curry although "spice level 2" was a bit too hot for me. Owner (or owner's son?) was very pleasant to chat with. Also had beautiful colored plates that made the already colorful food look even prettier. Will definitely return on my next trip to Spokane.
Pretty Good. This place was pretty good overall.
The atmosphere is kinda weird. Partially due to the space being huge with a lot of weird rooms off to the side that have couches and a tv (I dunno, just seemed weird and not very cozy to have half a restaurant with random sized/furnished rooms). They also had huge bamboo style umbrellas over the tables; it was a good look, but made dining at those tables very dark as the only lights in the place were being blocked by the umbrellas. Thankfully not pretentious or trying to be too hip, just a bit awkward.
The food was solid. Nothing amazing. It's my second favorite Thai I've had in the area, but is at least consistently good, just not the kind of place I crave again the next day/week. It's not as good as my favorite place, Phonthip up on Francis, but when I don't want to make the trek North, I have no qualms at all about Going to Thai on 1st.
Great Thai. My favorite Thai place in town, well anywhere really. Always hard to find a great one, but these guys are awesom. Chan and Nick are very friendly and have made me special dishes that were rocking. Once a week at least!
Pretty darn good Thigh food.. The interior is nothing spectacular but the dishes were quite tasty. Went a few times, upping the spice level each time until I made a clown out of myself with too much spice. Big fan of the lunch plates.
Born again fan. I never thought much of the place until recently. My friend has become a full-blown addict and has now converted me. Hallelujah. Great food, prompt and friendly service, plus bonus points for trying to pass off patio umbrellas as Asian decor.
The best Thai in Spokane. I was doing some work downtown and got the privilege of eating at Thai on 1st three times in one week (once for lunch, twice for dinner). They still have the best/authentic Thai Food in Spokane or surrounding areas. Everything we sampled our group sampled on the menu was excellent and prepared very similar to the food I eat in Thailand. Remember that they are authentic so if you order a 3, you are ordering a Thai 3 not a Spokane 3.
If you have only eaten at Americanized Thai places (or places that use Americanized ratings) this would be an appropriate.
If you order a 3 in Spokane try a 1
If you like 4 get a 2
If you like 5, 3 is probably good
If you add spice to your 5 get a 4
However they are slipping in the decor department, several booths are ripped and in need of repair and the menus need to be wiped down. And I will agree that their hours of operation are rather frustrating but I'll work around the hours just fix the fabric in the booths.
SIDEBAR: Another poster rated this restaurant as two stars because it didn't conform to their idea of what Thai food is. they mention that they ordered Larb Gai and wanted lettuce leaves to wrap the chicken with - sorry that's PF Changs Asian fusion NOT THAI. If I was served lettuce leaves with Larb Gai I would knock a star off for NOT being authentic. They also complained that it didn't come with "sauces" - again Larb Gai doesn't come with sauces, all the ingredients should be mixed in the chicken. Again just because PF Changs is loosely based Asian fusion chain restaurant, they are not Thai and authentic Thai restaurants don't serve dipping sauces with Larb Gai. I'm not trying to pick on the person in particular but I find annoying that people will rate down a authentic restaurant because it doesn't conform to the Americanized version they were first exposed to.
Do yourself a favor and try Thai on First if you wish to have an authentic Thai meal.
Always Great!. Have been going to Thai on First since it was the old Thai Cafe across the street. Consistently the best Thai food in Spokane - and I've tried them all! Great service, love this place! The Pad Thai is fantastic - not too much fish sauce like some places make it. Also - the spring rolls are the best in town - hands down! My husband loves the Tom Kha Gai soup. You won't be disappointed!
Being a Seattle native, I would argue that I know what Phad Thai should be. Phad Thai from here was very flavorful. It’s a pretty good balance of sweet and savory. They use thin rice noodles which are not typical but work well once you get past what your expecting for noodle width. Beware, I ordered a zero in spice as a baseline because of what others have said. A zero here is close to a typical 3 star. I would also say that while it wasn’t dry, it wasn’t saucy either. I’d go back.
I would dare say this is the best Pad Thai in Spokane. We had a pretty big order for the office and the owners had it ready for us right when they opened, and helped me carry it all out to my car. It was all perfectly packaged and tasted amazing!! They also accommodated our gluten free and vegan eaters as well without hesitation!
One of the best Thai restaurants in Spokane. The food is fresh and prices are reasonable.
