I got a good homecooked southern meal for $5.95. I got the jerk chicken with macaroni and cheese, collard greens, & cabbage. It was only supposed to be 2 sides, but when I asked which he suggested...the collards or the cabbage...he said "I'll give you both".
It was all very good and fresh...a quarter chicken dark...tender and with a nice jerk flavor...a little spicy, but not too much...just made my nose run a little. I don't like stuff that's too spicy hot...and this wasn't...it was just right. The collards and cabbage were delicious. The mac & cheese was ok...nothing special, but edible. They have some desserts that are homemade and some that are brought in. I had a piece of chocolate cake that wasn't homemade...it was good, but too much of a dark chocolate flavor for my liking. I'll try one of the homemades next time.
It's a simple little family run place with a few tables and chairs. I imagine they do mostly takeout. They've only been open a couple of months. Their website describes the place as "southern style cooking with a Carribean twist". And that's exactly what it is!
It's in "the hood", but I believe it's mostly pretty safe...definitely no problem in the daytime and I think pretty safe at night too. That corner used to be pretty rough, but it changed a LOT several years ago.
Food is great, staff is excellent, prices are unbeatable
