Dicono di noi:
We just arrived in Baveno and were looking for a place to eat. I admit to having a prejudice against hotel restaurants, but given the good rating/reviews for this ristorante, we went ahead. The receptionist at the hotel led us to the dining room and they quickly made a table ready for the three of us. The small dining room was clean and attractive. All good so far.
We were given the menus which had limited choices; the server was able to explain the dishes when we needed assistance. Ok so far but some flags
Two of us had the pork milanese and one had a tomato-based pasta to be preceded by a Caprese salad to be shared. The finish would be two mixed salads. Could have been ok. Obviously some confusion occurred when the starter and only two dishes arrived at the same time.
Where to start on the first arrivals. The Caprese salad had just one tiny basil leaf and no olive oil or salt and pepper. The tomatoes were not quite in season so most of the larger ones, such as these, have no flavor. Only the small ones are edible now; in fact, we had just had, in all places- an AutoGrill salad with very flavorful different cherry tomatoes for lunch. So much for the hotel Caprese. The pasta with tomato sauce had no flavor and looked like many dishes in poor restaurants in the United States. Absent was the Parmigiano Reggiano. The pork Milanese was overcooked, tasteless and looked like wienerschnitzel. The meat was accompanied by roasted potatoes and limp green beans of a kaki-green color, very soggy and over cooked. The mixed salads came and featured the same favorless tomatoes. We had to ask our server a couple of times for the olive oil, salt and pepper for our salads. No follow through. Finally one person in our party got up and went to another table to obtain them. Our server did bring the lemons after a couple of requests.
There was a large party in another room which might explain the service issues but the food/cooking didn't come close to matching my wife's excellent home cooking. Although we were charged a Coperto, we never received any bread during the meal.
All together, it was a bad meal for a medium-high price and I'm back to my prejudice against hotel restaurants.
