Dicono di noi: We went to visit the famous gardens of the Villa di Castello in early August, only to find out once there that it had been forced to close for the day (due to the very hot and windy conditions having increased the fire risk factor at the gardens). Happy ending to the story however as instead we discovered two nearby gems: the Villa della Petraia and the Bar Ristorante Cherici. This cozy, simple and genuine local bar-restaurant warms the heart. We had lunch there before heading up the hill to the Villa della Petraia. The concept is simple: first you choose at the counter among the various dishes that have just been cooked and then you go and sit at any table next to the locals. All tables are shared and everyone seems to know everybody else. There is mineral water and wine at each table and we all share the bottles (it is included in the price). At the end you can go back to the counter and choose your dessert or coffee. Prices are much lower than in downtown Florence. All the staff were very friendly despite my basic Italian vocabulary, and seeing what seemed the entire neighborhood having fun sitting down together in a small room made us realize how impersonal the urban restaurant experience has become. On the way back from the Villa della Petraia we again stopped at Cherici, this time to get some old-fashioned mint and chinotto soft drinks and saw that the lunch tables had been cleared and instead the older neighbors were still sitting down laughing and playing dominos and cards. We hope this place can hold on to its roots.
